History of the polyvalk | Polyvalk rental Friesland

The classic among sailboats - the one and only Polyvalk! You may have heard of it or have been out on the water yourself in this fantastic little boat. But did you know that there is now a successor, the comfortable Aira 22? Let's dive back in time and explore the history and development of these amazing sailboats.

The Polyvalk is a Dutch creation dating back to the 1960s. The design was conceived by Frans Maas, a talented Dutch yacht designer. The Polyvalk was originally built as a robust and reliable sailboat for rental on the Frisian lakes. The aim was to create a boat suitable for both beginners and experienced sailors, hence the name 'Polyvalk', which stands for 'polyvalent' or versatile in Dutch.

The first Polyvalks were made of wood and had simple rigging, making them easy to sail. These boats were soon popular with sailing schools and holidaymakers because of their stability and user-friendliness. The Polyvalk has undergone several improvements over the years, but the basic design has always been retained. Many sailors still come to Friesland to rent a polyvalk.

Over time, the demand for more modern materials and technologies began to grow. This created the need for a more advanced version of the Polyvalk. And so the Aira 22 was born!

The Aira 22 is a modern and sporty sailboat designed by Dutch company Aira Boats. They took the classic design of the Polyvalk as a basis, but upgraded the boat in several ways. First of all, the Aira 22 is made of durable and lightweight materials, such as fibreglass-reinforced polyester. This makes the boat faster and more manoeuvrable than its predecessor.

In addition, the Aira 22 has a slimmer design and a larger sail area, making it perform better in competitive sailing races. But don't worry, the Aira 22 is still very accessible to novice sailors, thanks to its user-friendly design.

The Aira 22 has quickly gained a large fan base in the sailing world. Sailing clubs, sailing schools and enthusiastic sailors have switched to this modern sailing boat because of its performance and versatility.

Although we have to say goodbye to the classic polyvalk as we knew it, it is great to see how the Dutch sailing tradition continues to evolve. The Aira 22 is a worthy successor and shows that tradition and innovation can go hand in hand.

So, whether you are nostalgic for the good old poly falcon days or ready to take on the adventure with the Aira 22, there is something for everyone on the water! Happy sailing, sailors!
